Big Sur Lodge – in a redwood forest by the Big Sur River – is a mecca of trails and views to the spectacular Santa Lucia Mountains. The Lodge is harmoniously set in a grand classic California Park.

Accommodations are very nice and modern – but the feel of Big Sur Lodge is woodsy and rustic.

Big Sur River roars out of the Santa Lucia Mountains to laze through the Big Sur Valley.

Trail’s Head Cafe

The Big Sur Lodge restaurant is set in a redwood forest with a deck over the Big Sur River. This is the home of Big Sur Cuising – imaginative dishes prepared with local, all organic natural ingredients – Fresh locally grown organic flowers and a friendly attentive staff.

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is a wonderland.
A short hike through redwoods, along a babbling brook, arrives at Pfeiffer Falls.

The Big Sur River meanders around in the Park through forests of ancient Redwoods and riparian woodlands. Many fine swimming holes can be found in this stretch of the river.

Some of the best trail heads of Big Sur’s fabled hikes are at the Lodge. A popular hike through redwoods to Pfeiffer Falls begins at the Lodge. Close to the cottages is a nature interpretative center and historical museum.

The Pfeiffer Big Sur sister state park, Julia Pfeiffer Burns, is home to the only California waterfall that drops into the Pacific, and several idyllic redwood groves and ocean coves. There is a short trail to this waterfall, and a longer one inland to another, Canyon Waterfall in an old redwood grove.

Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn is an ensemble of barns and cottages along Castro Canyon. A babbling brook deep redwood forests, an ocean’s sur. Memorable meals, a wood burning fireplace, candle lit rooms resonating with classical music and lined with books and photographs. It’s not funky, and it’s not Ventana Inn. It’s like a fairy tale.

In the 1930s, when Helmuth began building the old coast road stop over, he meant it to be like his native Norway. Now, it is also very Big Sur.

Lucia Lodge

Banana trees with no bananas, a Benedictine hermitage, sea kayaking amidst mountains, and a stupendous view all the way past the end of the world are the regular fare in Lucia.

Beamed ceiling cabins with antique four poster beds are for rent. Rooms have incredible views to the south — some are even greater. 831 667 2391

The restaurant looks out on the great Pacific vastness, and down at a lazy, lulling, lapping coast.

But, there’s a scrub jay named Bob that may perk you up right quick. He lights upon the railing next to plates that contain French fries, and looks at the human closest to it, then at the fries, and the message is transmitted.

The wait staff claims Bob was raised on hand fed fries. At $10 a sandwich, one may hesitate at turning over one of the fries to a bird, but Bob gets a look on his face like your dog, and there’s no denying him.

Not many people live in Gorda, last count showed three. But they keep a busy farm, restaurant and store in good fiddle.

Distinctive jade gallery. Cabins and rooms for rent. Llamas. Working artists. Goats. A boulder with million-year-old anemone holes.

Great setting for gaining a Big Sur coast orientation. Except for prices at the store and restaurant. Everything here is overpriced, and not indicative of what lies north for budget conscious travelers.

Ragged Point Inn is an awesome scene. In front, along the highway, one wouldn’t know it, as it is the most crassly commercial situation along the whole 88-mile Big Sur coast — almost like being at a beach boardwalk, even has a hot dog stand –and a very expensive gas station. But the Inn is something else.

It is a Mendocino type, very tasteful, elegantly situated for an authentic Big Sur experience. And the point itself is like an island of unique flora adrift in the Pacific. Seems to have its own climate, and definitely a distinct ambiance.

There are a few places along the southern half of Big Sur that have huge moods –Esalen is another. These are different and treasures unto themselves.
