Wildlife Rescue and
Rehabilitation Center
Internship and Volunteer
Opportunities
The
SPCA of Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and
Rehabilitation Center was established in 1982 and is
responsible for taking in and rehabilitating orphaned and
injured wildlife. Whenever possible, these animals are
released back into the wild. Veterinary services are
donated for the rehabilitated animals as well as their
ongoing care.
The Wildlife Center operates as
a hospital and rehabilitation center for indigenous
wildlife of Monterey County. It operates with permits
from the California Department of Fish and Game and the
US Fish and Wildlife Service. However, it receives no
funding from these agencies. All operation funds are
received through donations, memberships, grants and
auxiliaries.
Most of the 3,000 plus wild
animals we receive are victims of human intervention such
as habitat destruction, trapping entanglement, poisoning,
injuries from vehicles, domestic animals or malicious
harassment and by people who adopt or feed wildlife. The
center also provides a Wildlife Hotline used by hundreds
of Monterey County residents who call for advice each
year on their wildlife concerns and problems.
