Underground Big Sur Citizens Initiative to have power wires placed underground
This petition is to communicate to the Multi-Agency Council that Big Sur residents want to have all PG&E, electric, and AT&T and Pac Bell, phone and internet, power lines placed underground. Existing power lines span both sides of our historic and scenic Highway 1, often crossing highway 1 in a webbing pattern, creating a visual blight to the beautiful views of this unique wilderness and American Road Destination.Big Sur is a natural Wilderness Retreat enjoyed by visitors from all over the world, and by residents. Big Sur residents and businesses believe existing power lines stand out against this remarkable natural scenery and pose a hazard to Condors.
The recommendation of using larger black coated wiring and spreading these power lines 3 feet apart and 3 lines across, present new challenges in air space for flying condors and to Big Sur’s natural resource; wilderness appearance and scenic rights.
There are sources of funding for underground wiring available to unincorporated parts of Monterey County: PG&E Rule 20, the Bird Hazard Program and County funding to mitigate the real threat of fire hazard due to heavier, sagging power lines.
The residents and vistors of Big Sur want to establsh our poston that all power wirng be placed nderground in Blg Sur. We expect this work to be accomplshed within reasonable stages, and that all future wirng be mandated to be placed undergrond. Segments of Big Sur most sensltve to wlldlfe preservatlon should receve prorty.

Yes Votes and Comments My comments re undergrounding: I hate the look of telelphone poles and their wires breaking up the natural beauty of Big Sur. I have always felt this way…a bumper sticker could read,” utility poles: make them go underground!
Nancie van sciver EvoniukI support under grounding power wires. It’s unconscionable that PG&E should be allowed to continue with the present situation when the Condors lives are at stake. I drove into Monterey from Big Sur every day for twenty years and cannot count the times I had wished there were no power lines visible.
Jeanne FarringtonYes: I support undergrounding power wires in Big Sur
Jack SmytheWe MUST maintain the natural beauty of Big Sur and nature all over the world
Anthony CaliriI visit Big Sur regularly, and would like to see the unsightly power lines go underground, especially if they are harming wildlife.
Paul JimersonI totally support underground power lines in Big Sur. Eco-friendly, increases reliability of electrical service and reduces an unnecessary risk for fires. This is an idea whose time has come.

Joceleyne MusonThese power lines are ruining the natural beauty of Big Sur!
Rob JardineYes: I support undergrounding power wires in Big Sur
kat thomasMy comments re undergrounding: Overhead power, phone and data lines cause major harm to wildlife and water quality because of continuous tree cutting, vegetation removal and stream bank erosion and due to bird strikes and use of herbicides and wood preservatives. It is absurd not to improve these antique public systems by putting them in safe underground conduits.
Kevin CollinsMy comments re undergrounding: This project has the potential to take heaven and make it even more of a paradise-excellent idea!

The investment will be worth it in the long run. A solution that protects natural environment that doesn’t require new technologies.
Robert CarterYes: I support undergrounding power wires in Big Sur
Stop future power line installations immediately. The Condors and the View Shed need our protection by burying the power lines. The residents of Big Sur have been severely effected by fire, some of which were caused by downed power lines. Underground power lines would eliminate this issue, and the cost to the State in fighting these fires.
Ronna Rio EmmonsPut them underground
Alan PerlmutterI totally support underground wiring in Big Sur…Of course, I know that It is not feasible everywhere, and I know many many people have been so excited that the Condors have made such a comeback. Underground wiring is WIN WIN for everyone
Rachel FannMy comments re undergrounding: I am fully in support of underground wiring….I know that the residents of Big Sur are very proud of the fact that the Condor program is such a success, and that many people here have invested in the project, and at the same time, we need to preserve the rare wild beauty of Big Sur……with underground wiring, it is WIN WIN….

Allan BadinerPreserve the beauty of Big Sur. Put the power wires underground. Why disrupt the view of the beautiful coastline with power lines? Big Sur will not be the same cluttered up with telephone poles and power lines. They do not belong there! Especially as they are a hazard to the condors and the wildlife. Please don’t ruin the beauty and majesty of Big Sur.

Howard JonesMy grandfather came to Big Sur in 1964 and I’ve been coming ever since and have lived here the past 30 years. By all means, let’s get the power lines and phone lines put underground. Besides the unsightliness, they are a fire hazard when up in the air.
Carissa ChappelletMy comments re undergrounding: Please invest the extra time and money to maintain the beauty of this amazing place not to mention the safety concerns.

Ariane SchmidtI fully support under grounding power wires in Big Sur for condor protection and for aesthetic reasons. The stunning beauty of Big Sur is what inspired me to devote myself to a career in Environmental Sustainability when I first came here 7 years ago. You cannot underestimate the importance of beautiful places along our shore and particularly the power of Big Sur’s positive impact on those who are graced by the awe-inspiring views. We must do what we can to protect that.
Jenni GrantYes: I support undergrounding power wires in Big SurIn a real way, we are a blight on a natural setting, not an embellishment. Thanks to you who support the natural and not the artifice.
Maj-Britt EagleI support undergrounding power wires in Big Sur. The fire on September 6th next to Henry Miller Library was on my property. PG&E refuses to take any responsibility even though it is their power lines. We must help them to clean up their act for the safety of all of us.

It is essential to have the lines under ground – obviously it will be cheaper in the long run – cause no power outages to us residents – be no harm to anyone or anything !!- I lived on a tiny Danish Island for 25 years – they already had underground everything by 1980 – no problems with animals – humans – cars or storms !

My comments re undergrounding: Nobody wants to see those poles & wires gone underground more than me; wish we’d jumped on this 3-4 years ago so I could be there now to write this. Undergrounding will also help eliminate a lot of the fire danger lurking in those wires – I know THAT 1st hand. I miss the Longhouse (which would still be here but for those wires & poles),my home for 25 years.
It’s great to see how well-organized our community support is on this issue. I’m holding good thoughts & wish I was there.

Underground power lines benefit everyone, and will save power companies money in the long term, when you factor in the cost of downed power lines, storm damage and fires
Anne BagshawMy comments re undergrounding: Having the power lines underground makes perfect sense for Big Sur in so many ways—especially esthetically and in terms of preventing power outages. The Big Sur coast is an international scenic treasure and a refuge for many wild animals. All this needs to be protected.
.Sheila SheppardAs the owner of a home in Big Sur and a current Los Altos City Councilwoman, I support the undergrounding of utilities in Big Sur, for the following reasons: (1) to prevent wildfires started by utility equipment such as the recent fire behind Deetjen’s; (2) to reduce deaths of endangered California condors; and (3) to restore the natural beauty of this wilderness area. The City of Los Altos used Rule 20A funds from PG&E to underground utilities on First Street; perhaps these type of funds can also be used by Monterey County to pay for this project. Thank you for considering these comments, and for your service to the Big Sur community.

LET’S DO IT!
Richard Taylor Suzanne ParisWe are long overdue for putting power and telephone lines underground.
Erlinda Montano HiscockNowadays, property owners who want power now are required to install underground feeds, very expensive. However, PGE continues to install above ground equipment. On Stone Ridge, in very close proximity to the recent fire, PGE last year erected three huge poles with large surge protectors, supposedly to amp up and regulate the surges on the power lines further south. The equipment hums and makes intermittent loud crackling sounds.
Joyce DuffyWe are behind the curve internationally -rather than ahead – on this matter. Underground utilities ultimately are less expensive to repair and allow us to enjoy our viewsheds.
Paula YoonI live in Dunlap, Ca in the Sierra Nevada foothills and visit the Big Sur area yearly. The Big Sur area is a spectacular place, unlike any other. Getting rid of the power lines will contribute to it’s beauty. Today individual photovoltaic systems are more affordable and eliminate some of those wires, as well as free their owners from the power companies. This would be a good alternative as well. As for the phone lines, a couple of well placed and inconspicuous cell towers might ultimately cost less than moving all of the lines underground. One way or the other, it’s time for the overhead lines to go away. You have my support.
Brad Bryce

Ellen StoneWe feel that it is absolutely necessary to put the power lines underground for aesthetic reasons as well as wildlife protection. It also in the power companies self interest as it would significantly reduce service calls for down lines and also reduce the possibilities of fire from down lines.
Dennis & Elaine MaloneyMy comments re undergrounding: Having lived in Big Sur for twenty years, I appreciated the fact that we had telephone and power for many varied reasons – convenience, safety, the ability for businesses to continue to keep their doors open, etc. However, the increased power needed, and T1 lines, etc, has increased the visibility of the lines needed to carry these additional loads. It also seems to me that the power companies and telephone companies are benefiting from these additional needs. Let’s keep this magical coast as clear as possible from visual blight.

Michael RieseGreat email. Glad you mentioned “New Camaldoli ” http://www.contemplation.com/
We’ve made private retreats there for nigh on to thirty-some years. A splendid place.
Best, Betty and Peter MichelozziI support undergrounding power wires in Big Sur My comments re undergrounding: As both a Monterey County native and the IT manager at Esalen Institute, I fully support the initiative to underground all utility power and telephony/data cabling throughout the Big Sur region. Substantive improvements in the quality of the view shed and maintenance of healthy habitat for wildlife (specificically the California Condors) are a critical imperative here.
In addition, our region is radically underserved for data communications. Our sole local exchange carrier (AT&T) is constrained by PUC, Coastal Commission and CalTrans and is unable to deliver enabling technologies for emergency services, schools, residents and businesses on the Big Sur coast due to their inability to deliver high speed fiberoptic connectivity down the coastline. We are effectively crippled by the 40-50 year old analog copper technology and have essentially no recourse in pursuit of enabling high-speed data transport.
Undergrounding of cabling would provide AT&T (and competitors)
the opportunity to direct bury fiberoptic/high speed cabling to better serve the technology needs of our community.
Dan Eyde
IT Manager Esalen InstituteFinally! This is something I think about almost every time I travel down to Big Sur. If there is ever a cost-effective place to underground utilities, this is it, especially considering the quality of the view and the number of people who are drawn here purely for the natural beauty. We would never allow those power lines today and its time to get rid of them.
Frank HennessyI support undergrounding power wires in Big Sur My comments re undergrounding: Yes please. Lets upgrade the esthetics of this beautiful area by putting both power and telephone lines underground. They are unsightly and create additional fire hazards. And while at it, how about including fiber optic lines in the ground so residents don’t have to rely on satellite only internet service.

PG&E is poised to string big black tree wires across Partington Canyon, decreasing the possibility that condors might collide with the current wiring.
Why degrade the appearance of that beautiful redwood canyon to possibly provide increased safety for another iconic species?
Big Sur offers a unique visual experience for 4 million tourists annually. Respect what that represents, don’t add even more of those ugly wires to our landscape – put them underground!!!

Yes, I support the concept of burying all utility lines underground along the Big Sur Coast. I would include power and telecommunications and extend the service area to include the South Coast. Having lived on the South Coast for over 40 years, worked at Pacific Valley School for almost 20 years, and served with the Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade for almost 25 years, I am aware of the dangers and difficulties of above the service utilities and the difficulties of being off the power grid. The cost of fire caused by down power lines over the years, the cost of power generation on the South Coast in generators and fuel, and now the danger of the web power lines to the recovering condor all make this a tangible plan for the near future.
James G. Kimball Director of Operations and Technology, Retired Pacific Unified School District (Now Big Sur Unified)I applaud this effort, however, speaking for a large segment of people living in South Big Sur I would like to ask that consideration be given to include power extending all the way to connect to the southern end of County Line. It is almost unfathomable that a tourist destination with the massive world wide popularity as Highway 1 does not have continuous power/ telephone all the way down the coast.! ..it is not only a detriment to the safety of the millions of tourists who travel this Highway yearly, it poses a huge safety threat for those living along this coastal corridor…lack of communication impedes the rescue efforts of the Volunteer Fire Brigade, and lack of basic power to the K-12 Public school at Pacific Valley and Monterey’s southern most Caltrans yard makes living conditions and working conditions intrinsically more difficult and expensive for all tax payers and citizens.

Ventana Inn & SpaI love the underground power initiative. Please consider this in addition:
It’s crucial that the South Coast gets power. All businesses and residents generate their own power right now. If power was run down the Hwy 1 corridor it would be fantastic for the South Coast and the North. If there was a break in power, power could be run from either direction to restore power quickly.
I’ve travelled all over the world and everywhere I went the population had access to a power grid, high speed internet and cell service. On the South Coast of Big Sur with 3 million visitors a year driving past we don’t’ have any of those amenities.
John Handy,
owner Treebones ResortWe support the under grounding of the powerlines in Big Sur, however we
would propose that it be extended north to include the Palo Colorado area as well. We have the main powerlines here in our neighborhood that run from Carmel Valley down to Big Sur. They are high voltage and pose a threat to the birds, humans(they run 15 feet from our home) and they also pose an extreme fire danger. They make a loud buzzing noise when it’s foggy or there’s moisture in the air. They ruin the view shed in our pristine mountains and forests of the coast. We too are affected by the power line monoliths here in the Palo Colorado area, which is on the north Big Sur coast and should be protected as well!
Jon and Lori Zobler/ Palo ColoradoYes I support putting utilities under ground!!
