The Northern gateway to Big Sur emerges from marine terraces and contorted rocks. This cornucopia of geology has massive boulders that rose from more than 10 miles beneath the sea. Some rocks migrated here from as far away as southern Mexico. It is pastoral as a prairie and boisterous as a Himalayan mountain all within view of a deep ocean rich with life.
The coastal terraces occur only in the very Northernmost and Southernmost reaches of Big Sur. They are home to a great variety of wildlife and native plants, especially wildflowers.
