		From Lucia (pop.3) the waters get powder blue green, and the mountains are brown red. In-between, jade coves and languid watersheds meet in a dream. Fog streams through the sphere in an elevated zone of its own. Above this spot a Benedictine monastery offers fruitcake, and the world's most astounding view. In back of this spot a scruffy blue jay presides over the restaurant deck of the historic Lucia Lodge. There's no talking at the monastery, and lights are out early at the Lodge. Most people are mesmerized by the scene. In the Santa Lucia mountain range here there are ghost towns and abandoned homesteads. Once William Randolph Hearst tried to buy it all for his San Simeon ranch. But pioneers wanted to keep it like this.
