A hike in to the falls at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park fully reveals the magical sight. It is rare if only because it is the only waterfall into the Pacific Ocean in North America. This is a typical signature Big Sur, Ventana watershed as it nourishes deep, rich hardwood forests along its way from the Santa Lucia highlands. It crevices along a quake fault, and, becomes outrageously unique when it drops 70 feet into the ocean. Saddle Rock embraces the falls' cove on the south side, and creates an idyllic cove. On top of the falls, humans have planted a garden of the region's renowned plants. The eclectic collection of rocks here shows very unusual geologic forces went to great trouble to create such an extraordinary event.
