A melding of classical geologies over conflicting tectonic plates causes a very unusual and evocative place to emerge in Big Sur. A new and precocious mountain range rises out of deep ocean canyons. Huge mountains of rock from tropical latitudes have migrated here to be part of this wild coast. Other rock formations have come over from the Sierras, and others yet have come up in volcanic explosions from deep in the earth. This is an island that has been joined to the rest of California by rivers silting up around the the north, east and south ends of this weird and beautiful place. |
